Leader: Pure Storage
Pure Storage took home gold this year for both execution and vision on the Magic Quadrant. The Mountain View, Calif.-based vendor offers two families of SSAs: its block-protocol-based FlashArray family consisting of FlashArray//M and FlashArray//X; as well as FlashBlade for file and object workloads. Pure designed its own storage modules with commodity NAND flash memory for both the //X series and FlashBlade. Pure is quickly bringing new SSA technologies to market such as NVMe and moving into high-growth, unstructured data workloads such as machine learning and artificial intelligences with its FlashBlade product. Gartner said that Pure has often set the pace and direction of the SSA market.
Strengths: Pure's in-house engineering creates a cost, packaging and time-to-market advantage against all competing NVMe-based offers in the industry. The company offers a subscription model, dubbed Evergreen Storage Service, that allows customer to pay for effective GB storage usage.
Weaknesses: Compression, deduplication and encryption are always on and cannot be disabled for the FlashArray//M or //X series. Pure needs to increase its international presence and expand within key verticals such as government, according to Gartner.
