Longtime SSA provider Kaminario outperformed the market in 2017 with its scale-up, scale-out K2 arrays. In May, Kaminario launched the software-based K2.N, which provides a NVMe over Fabric, disaggregated and distributed storage solution that offers the features of the K2 via a software-only consumption model called Cloud Fabric. Kaminario's ForeSight offers guarantees such as assured performance, availability and a lifetime SSD wear-out guarantee. Additionally, Kaminario Flex is a new administration tool available for K2 that automates and simplifies updates, changes and reconfigurations. Needham, Mass.-based Kaminario ranks No. 3 for vision and among the middle of the pack for execution on the Magic Quadrant.
Strengths: Kaminario has implemented a business model that outsources all hardware sourcing, inventory, delivery and manufacturing to Tech Data, which Gartner says broadens and widens the company's reach. Kaminario has strong backward compatibility and investment protection.
Weaknesses: The privately held company lacks financial transparency for customers to assess long-term viability. Kaminario also has considerable customer concentration within the Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) and cloud-based application providers segments.
